Bad Gig? Now What?

Written by Arty Skye. Posted in Performing Live

Sometimes you have a bad night. Your guitar was out of tune, you forgot the lyrics, you missed cues, and your head was just somewhere else.  It happens in music, it happens in sports, it happens in life. But it’s what you do about it that separates the winners from the losers!

Q. Dear Ian-: I am a 23yr old multi-instrumentalist. I play the kit, guitars, bass, keys, percussion...I am building a portfolio of tracks (beats) i.e. hip hop, r&b, dance....I rarely sample and I am at the point where I  would like to sell them. Who do I holler at for production work? Who can I send my material to? And, can I trust people to not resample my work having only a poor man's copyright? Thanks, Devin

Approaching managers, record labels, talent scouts & business partners

Written by Rick Goetz. Posted in Music Marketing & Promotion

I am constantly surprised at the way musicians approach people to start business relationships.  I have had a blog up and running for the last two years as a way of getting potential customers to see what my services as a music business coach entail and also because I enjoy writing and learning more about how the music business does and doesn’t work.  I am not as overwhelmed by the pure volume of submissions I used to be when I was working as an A&R executive at Atlantic or Elektra Records but the manner in which people approach me is still exactly the same.

How to find out if someone in the Music Biz is REAL or not

What getting signed means today is vastly different from what it meant when this site was first launched over ten years ago.  This article - and many of my upcoming articles, will not be directly aimed at how to put a demo or an independent record into an A&R executive's hands.  They will, however, be focused on how to advance an artist's career.  There is much more to the game these days and much more an artist has to do on their own before the odds of approaching a record label (or any strong strategic partner) are better than the odds of buying Lotto tickets.

Music and Waiting: How Do I Get a Record Deal?

Written by Rick Goetz. Posted in How to Get Signed

Since I first put my Musician Coaching Website up a couple of years ago, the question I get asked more than any other by a huge margin is, "How do I get a record deal?"

In some ways I am surprised by this question because from a large percentage of musicians I meet there is a great deal of hostility and resentment towards the industry.  It is as if people are willing to put aside their frustration with labels only when their career has stalled.
